Dreamt up by local Omeo legend Christophe Stevens of Velo Grammont, the Frostbite XL course is an absolutely belting gravel track encompassing the best and somewhat unknown regions nestled in the quiet corner of The East Gippsland Region.
Smooth gravel, pristine country-side, hinterlands and some monster climbs all significantly feature over the course of this ride.
The course ran as an event in May and there are short versions with shuttles as well but this course can be ridden at anytime with an eye of caution on the middle of winter and snowfall at some of the elevated sections of the course.
If you want to bike pack this, it’s doable in the warmer months and as a camping option, it looks as though you can camp out at the Ensay Recreation Reserve for $15 with hot showers and power hookups.
Alternatively you can try the pub at the Little River Inn in Ensay which says it has rooms and is open Thursday – Monday for lunch and dinner although this is not verified and don’t rely on this information. Call them first.
For a journal account of the event, you can follow the link to an article I wrote regarding it at Desire Lines Cycling Club.
I have had some friends bike pack this ride and found as smarter option to start in Ensay and then use Omeo as an overnighter location.
