Well who doesn’t love a Jon Thornton Audax route! The gravel roads around Hurstbridge, Yarra Glen & Kinglake are simply stunning and curated (by Jon) to be non-technical, ridable, scenic and therefore significantly enjoyable.

The rolling gravel roads through the back of Cottles Bridge, Panton Hill & Christmas Hill are a great way to warm up the legs before enjoying a vine tour through the backroads of Yarra Glen.

A scenic climb up to Toolangi is particularly memorable before a guarded descent down Mt Slide road taking care to nurse the bike through the numerous switchbacks.

The climbing continues up into Kinglake via Old Kinglake Rd which is a steady consistent climb on a well-formed track dropping you off on the road a km or two before lunch.

The famous Bowden Spur follows a short climb after, although you’ll be thankful that you are descending rather than climbing, before more rolling Nillumbik gravel through Strathewan, Arthurs Creek and finally into Hurstbridge.

A fantastic gravel experience well within reach of Melbourne!
